Getting my groove on in Cannes

Neil Young.  Paul Anka.  Leonard Cohen.  Roch Voisine.  Michael Bublé.  k-os.  Haydain Neale.  Bryan Adams.  Justin Nozuka.  Justin Bieber.  (Yes, even Justin Bieber.)

Joni Mitchell.  Molly Johnson.  Céline Dion.  Alanis Morissette.  Deborah Cox.  Jully Black.  Feist.  Nelly Furtado.  Diane Krall.  Tegan & Sarah.

And Saidah Baba Talibah.  (Check out her website for her bio.)

Chances are, you’ve never heard of Saidah Baba Talibah (SBT).  And you’re probably wondering why I’m talking about a Canadian artist on my blog about my life in France.  Well, last night, D and I had the good fortune to see Saidah Baba Talibah and her solRawkestra perform in Cannes.

SBT isn’t an unknown to me however.  She is a talented singer/artist/musician who I met several years ago.  Her music is some serious *insert your adjective of choice here*.  (I have a specific descriptor in mind but since my mother reads this blog I’ll let you choose your own.)  When a mutual friend — thank you gK — told me that SBT would be in Cannes I told D that we had to go see her perform.

SBT’s music is raunchy, soulful, sexy, sweet, dirty, direct, and powerful.  She’ll have you grooving, jumping, rawking, and shaking your stuff.

And that’s exactly what happened last night at Morrison’s Pub in Cannes.  As part of the Canadian Blast during the MIDEM conference, SBT and the solRawkestra dropped their brand of raunchy soul on an unsuspecting audience.  Maybe it was Donna Grantis‘ sparkly gold electric guitar or perhaps it was the sousaphone — yes, sousaphone! — that Rob Teehan brought on stage, that got the crowd talking.  The sousaphone alone should have told them that this was no ordinary band.

Then Saidah took the stage in a black wet-look one-piece bodysuit and black leopard tights.  She rocked a pair of stiletto heels and electric blue eyelashes.  Everything was laid bare my friends.  And people kept talking.  And wondering.  I heard one guy exclaim to a friend, “what the…?”  I laughed (to myself) because I knew “what the…?”

The crowd finally got the full picture when SBT opened her mouth and sang.  She hit us with a soulful number that had me thinking very healthy thoughts about my husband…but I knew that there was more to come.  By the end she had us clapping, screaming.  She had all of us all riled up.  We grooved, jumped, rawked, and shook our stuff.

On the drive home, D kept saying “wow! that was a show!”  Yeah Saidah, what a show!

So, if SBT and the solRawkestra arrive in your town, go see them.  You will not be disappointed.
