My Latest Crave: Burger – Holy Chuck Burgers

When you’re away from home on an extended trip or vacation what food/meal do you crave?

Before arriving in Toronto my biggest crave was for a good hamburger.  I wouldn’t say that I’m a huge burger eater but lately it seems that burgers are everywhere.  Some of my favourite food blogs and magazines are feeding this need.

I mentioned this hunger to my younger brother and he suggested that we hit a few places that he’d heard about.  First up was Holy Chuck.

As this was our first visit we spent a really, really long time reviewing the menu.  We said ‘no’ to the first three burgers — The Holy

{ Fries + cheese curds + gravy = poutine! }

Chuck, The Big Chuck, or The Cheeseburger — as we weren’t sure we could manage all that meat.  Instead, we opted for The Jr Cheeseburger.  As a side we stayed Canadian and ordered some poutine.  To wash it all down I chose a vanilla shake.

It’s not often that I regret my food choice but that night I did.  I regret not ordering The Cheeseburger or The Holy Chuck.  The Jr Cheeseburger was tasty and it was cooked perfectly.  But it didn’t satisfy me.  I wanted more.  I wanted a burger that I could sink my teeth into.  I wanted a big-ass burger.  The Jr Cheeseburger was like a grown-up version of McD’s cheeseburger (with better quality meat and savoury toppings).  So yes, I wanted more, a whole lot more.

Lucky for me, we had the poutine.  My taste buds and stomach cheered when it came to the poutine.  It was good, all gravy and cheesy goodness on a plate.  The gravy was tasty and not too salty; there was enough cheese curd for every fork full.  It was just a shame that I had to share it with K.

As for my vanilla milkshake, it took me a while to finish this dessert in a drink.  It was thick and creamy and full in the flavour department.  And it was definitely on the sweet side.  In fact, about halfway through it tasted more like caramel than vanilla.  But, after all the saltiness of the burger and poutine the hit of sweetness finished the meal on a positive note.

    Good lord! I may have to extend my next layover in Toronto! And I am shocked – how did I live with a Canadian for a year without ever hearing about Poutine! When I was little I used to eat bags of cheese curds – this is literally my fantasy french fry basket. Go Canada!

      You lived in Canada and you’d never heard of (or tried) poutine? That’s just baffling! When it’s done well — good gravy is key — it’s downright amazing. I used to get a quick fix at NYFries (it’s not bad). I don’t know if there’s a joint in Paris, or elsewhere in France, where they make/serve poutine. I think that would be a perfect fit: poutine and Paris.
