I remember it like it was yesterday. I had recently graduated from high school and should have been preparing for university. Instead, I was in Paris, as part of a European jaunt, for the first time. It was hot and steamy and I had fallen further in love with France.
Fast forward 23 years and I found myself in another beautiful French city on another hot and steamy day. A break in the renovation schedule meant that I had an afternoon free in which to explore Montpellier. I didn’t roam far as it was too hot to do anything more than sitting under an umbrella with a cold drink in hand.
Place de la Comédie is an ideal spot. It seems that all of Montpellier and the visiting tourists pass through the square on their way to their destination. The place is wide open with vendors selling leather goods, hats — definitely needed — all leading you to the beautiful Opéra Comédie.
I did get a quick look around courtesy of Le Petit Train de Montpellier and afterwards I decided to revisit the sites but this time on foot.
Montpellier is a very walkable city with its cobblestone pedestrian area. The shopping also beckoned especially as all the stores had their AC units on full blast. I found myself in a little fromagerie, La Cloche à Fromage, all because I was hungry for some goat cheese. It would have been madness to buy any kind of cheese given that it was at least 30°C and I had at least two hours to wait before meeting D.
All too soon it was time to go. Another trip to Montpellier is being planned but this time it will include a trip to Palavas-les-Flots, if only to cool off!
